The challenge schools face

📱

Hidden devices

Students may have phones, smartwatches, or other devices connecting to the internet during exams.

🌐

Mobile hotspots

Personal hotspots can provide internet access even when the school network is restricted.

⚖️

Fairness

Undetected cheating undermines the integrity of the exam system and is unfair to honest students.

🔍

Hard to detect

Manual inspection is time-consuming and unreliable. Devices can be well hidden.

ExamNet – your digital exam guard

ExamNet is an Android app that analyzes the Wi-Fi environment in the exam room. The app detects:

  • Active Wi-Fi networks nearby
  • Mobile hotspots that appear
  • New devices connecting to the network
  • Changes in the network environment over time

Everything is presented in a simple, clear interface that exam supervisors can monitor in real-time.

Why choose ExamNet?

An affordable alternative to expensive dedicated Wi-Fi scanners like NetAlly AirCheck G3

No. ExamNet runs on standard Android phones and tablets. You don't need any dedicated hardware, special equipment or technical expertise. Download the app, start scanning, and get a real-time overview of the Wi-Fi environment in the exam room.

Yes. ExamNet scans for Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs), signal strength and MAC addresses – but everything is stored locally on the device only. No data is sent to the cloud, and no traffic data is collected. The app is designed with privacy in mind and complies with European privacy legislation (GDPR). It only analyses the wireless environment, just like viewing which networks appear in your phone's Wi-Fi settings.

Yes. ExamNet works on all Android devices with Wi-Fi support – both phones and tablets. Many schools use existing Android tablets they already have available, making the solution very cost-effective compared to dedicated hardware devices.

Dedicated wireless scanners typically cost €5,000 or more per device, require technical expertise and maintenance from the IT department. ExamNet provides equivalent hotspot detection through a simple Android app from €290/year, with automatic updates and no need for specialist knowledge. One device covers one room, and you can easily scale with multiple devices.

ExamNet is currently only available for Android. Apple restricts access to Wi-Fi scanning APIs on iOS, making it technically impossible to offer the same functionality on iPhone and iPad. Most schools have Android devices available that can be used for this purpose.

// FROM A RESEARCH PROJECT IN OSLO

Wireless signals picked up in research project
ExamNet grew out of a curiosity for wireless signals – and a desire to do something useful with it.

In 2022, Bjorn Martin Hegnes cycled around Oslo with a receiver, picking up 1.7 million wireless signals. The point was to show how much wireless activity goes on around us without us thinking about it. That experience led to thinking about other places where unwanted wireless activity is a real problem – such as exam rooms.

By day, he works as a security advisor in the public sector, responsible for IT security and cloud services. ExamNet is a side project built because schools deserve a simple and affordable tool for detecting Wi-Fi hotspots during exams – without having to invest in expensive specialist equipment.
